What a weekend in Kimbolton, sun, 20 degrees and a brand new Tonykart!
Cameron raced here once 3 years ago as a cadet so he knew where the track
was!
Saturday shake down was a 46second lap and a mile off the pace with
complaints that he could not even turn the steering wheel. But after some minor
adjustments to the height of the wheel, front spacers and camber the second
session put him right on the back of the crowd with a 44.6, then the
progression was dramatic as he followed others and learnt very fast, achieving
faster times in every session ending the afternoon with a 43.2
Sunday morning, MORE SUN! heat one and a grid of 7th lead to a good first
few laps and again an improvement in time down to a 43.15 but ended on the 4th
lap with an accident in front of him that he just could not avoid, slow speed
and looked like nothing but then the kart behind ran over his rear wheel and
bent the rear axle. Great promise though.
Heat 2 with a grid of 12 and an off at the first corner meant a fight back
from last (26th) with a finish in 16th being very creditable and a lap time of
42.95 was yet again showing his improvement.
Heat 3 with a start of 19th was again his best heat, a reasonable start
followed by a move up the field to 11th place was yet again showing his
potential and now down to 42.7 was getting his times in line with the top 10.
The final after a DNF in heat one meant a grid of 17th, the start didn’t go
to plan due to a driver that insisted on driving down the centre of the track,
braking far to early and Cameron's lack of aggression to push him out of the
way (commendable that he wants to pass correctly but as a spectator I wanted to
see a bit more) he was clearly faster and once he did clear him on lap 5 it was
too late to catch the midfield but yet another fastest lap for him at 42.6, a
time that should have put him nearer the top 5 than the top 15.
The most pleasing was that in 10 consecutive sessions CAmeron improved his time, great potential and promise for next month now he knows the track a lot better.
