Description

Cameron started Saturday with a very positive mind and attitude after the speed seen in both Kimbolton and Shennington and this attitude was proved right with some amazing speed and times, take a look at our latest youtube addition http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltFjh8xGyMU to see just how fast we were, but a time of 45.26 was fantastic and done between traffic. This was 7/10ths fatser than before and with more than 4mph more at the top of the hill we were amazed by the progress.

Sunday mornings are always Cameron’s downfall and we spent a lot of time talking about how we are going to improve this, with a POLE in heat 1, 19th in 2 and 13th in 3 I immediately felt we had these the wrong way round but Cameron kept the positives from Saturday and was ready to go. The objective of turn 1 first was the only thing in his mind and he achieved that by half a kart but with the drift of P2 man Ben Walker in turn 2 Cameron was edged onto the Grass and lost 10 more places recovering to hit the top of the hill in 12th and with dirty cold tyres another 3 places were lost down the hill to be 15th after lap 1! Distaster was in my mind but amazing was the recovery, with lap after lap of amazing speed and head down he achieved a very commendable 8th place in a 7 lap race and beating Lee who was clearly the class of the field but had started at the back.

Heat 2 was a grid of 19th and a slow start to avoid the mess in the first few turns, the speed didn’t seem to be there until lap 5 and that was probably a tyre pressure issue, but a finish of 14th was ok if not great for grid points.

Heat 3 was his best race of the day and but for some crazy moves from other karts and very poor marshalling that would be highlighted in the final a higher place than 8th would have been achievable. It was again a slow start from 13th and back to 15th (sounds familiar) but this time the speed was back and some great moves on good drivers saw him catch the battle for 3rd with 2 laps to go. With constant bumping and pushing in-between the 4 karts in front of him you could see his cautious mind kicking in, then the 71 was given a shove and drove over the grass at full speed rejoining the track within inches of Cameron’s bumper with no concern for safety. 3 of the 4 drivers were called in after the race but no action was taken and none of the drivers were excluded, making what happened in the final a disgrace.

The final start was 10th, not bad but could have been better without that 14th as 5 more points would have meant 5 more places. A reasonable start to only drop 2 places was just the beginning, passing 2 karts in the first 2 laps showed that we were ready, then behind 10th a small bump going into the boot unsettled the kart in front but the driver continued and it was not even enough to allow Cameron past but for some reason that was a black and white warning. Then after passing that kart and 2 more we were flying the motor was going up the hill like a rocket and we cruised up to the back of 3 karts. The first 2 got into a bashing match and at one point were on top of each other but for this there were no black and white flags or warnings! Then after passing the first we clipped the back of the 44 into the last turn, again nothing that put him off the track or even slowing him down but 3 corners later we passed him and the next to start the Chase of 24 but this click was viewed as “heavy contact” and a black flag was issued, not a drive thru as had been used all weekend but a straight black flag, an absolute joke of a decision that could have nothing to do with the way we were driving, Cameron is one of the best drivers on the grid for being fair, he does not use other karts as brakes, he doesn’t overtake under yellow and 99% of the time it is him that backs out when there is a 50/50 that would end in contact. I now understand more about why some grids at certain tracks are reducing in favour of other venues when I watch the way that some incidents are overlooked and others over punished. That is my rant over but be assured Cameron has arrived! Setting top 5 times all weekend and setting his fastest lap in the final on his last lap only 0.2 off the fastest lap of the race is yet more proof of that. With another 4 laps of the race left I am very confident that we would have been near the top 5 and with the fastest lap without this stupid decision (no wonder they would not let us run the Camera on Sunday!)
