On Saturday Cameron was clearly in the mood and setting
times that were top 3 and getting faster with every session, we don’t have a
time to compare with last month as this was circuit 1, not 2 as then but
compared with 2 months ago when the temperature was much higher and the track
faster it was a major step up in performance setting a 42.2 in comparison to
his previous best of 42.51.
Sunday was a different story.
Heat 1, turn 1, mass pile up AGAIN that involved nearly all of the top runners
and included Cameron who’s first lap was a 73! After having to get out of the
kart to remove another kart that was on top before getting his head down to
ensure he didn’t finish last, it was a commendable effort considering the
nearest kart was 10 seconds down the road before he came out of turn 1 and with
nobody to chase he still set the 4th fastest lap and looked very
good.
Heat 2 with a grid of 24th was going to be tough
but we set a target of top 10 due to the undoubted speed. At the end of lap 1
he was in a great 17th place and was following Aaron Head in traffic
and we hope learning a lot, then another place to be 16th after lap
2 and the hope of the top 10 was becoming real but then after 54 allowed Aaron
passed on the back straight he turned in with a ridiculous block mid straight
and put Cameron on the grass, it was very well held to avoid a big crash but
the loss of 4 places back to 20th was not deserved, after recovering
and battling with a small group he came out in 19th, again a
promising race that could have been much more.
Heat 3 with a grid of 2nd was a very promising
prospect as last month we had run away into a comfortable 2nd place
from the front row. A good start saw him
in 2nd after turn one but then dropping a couple of places to be in
5th after 2 laps, then the heat rose and he managed to get back to 3rd on lap 5 before a disgraceful attack from number 70 that went totally
unpunished, watching from the pit area you could see Cam and 70 brake into the
bus stop at the same point but then 70 clearly let off the brakes and fired Cameron
into the grass, this was not a tap to move someone out the way or let them know
you are there, this was a blatant attack and should have been punished but yet
again it seems that the marshalls and 4 steward were all watching other parts
of the track! This dropped him back to 12th and then one more move
saw a recover to 11th but a top 3 was the real opportunity and this
would have given a much better grid for the final due to the chaos in all
rounds putting the front runners all over the place.
With a final grid of 18th we knew it would be a
hard race but a battling performance in the midfield saw a 6 place gain to 12th and again top 4 times so although not a great race day a very pleasing
performance.
Thanks to Jonathan Stilp for all the performance aids for both team SDG
drivers, this man knows how to run fast karts and knows how to get our drivers
in the right frame of mind to be at the front.
