Super 1 Round 1
This was always going to be a tough weekend but having
electrical problems and testing some new parts on Friday made it much harder
than we anticipated. Cameron probably only achieved 2 trouble free sessions and
I think that these were not perfect due to the mystery electrical issue. A
change of loom, switches, coil and battery seemed to solve it for Saturday
morning but we were so far on the back foot it was very tough on him.
Saturday morning was wet and cold and it took us both
sessions to get anywhere near the pace, after months of practice on the winter
wet line we discovered, along with 90% of the seniors, that the summer wet line
was now the place and we had never driven that before. Times were slow and
being in session one during the real wet meant a very lowly grid position but
having been to both the previous club meetings and without camera’s we felt
that this was probably a better place to start than mid-pack.
Heat 1 proved the theory as with a cautious start we passed
10+ karts in the first 3 corners, then to be cruelly TAKEN OUT by CGR 73 returning
to the track from the mud straight into the side, bending stub, track rod and
more fatal the rear axle meant we didn’t do a lap. Shame but that’s racing, fortunately
for us this was the last heat of the day so a leisurely rebuild and a good
nights sleep were the order of the day.
With a DNF in heat 1 we were heading for the repercharge
unless we had a top ten finish from the back and with the standard of driving
that was unlikely but never say never. For some reason we had Mr Onder in our
heat after missing his own, not sure what rule book that came from! And this
proved to be an issue as we battled with him most of the second part of the
race, unfortunately there was a red flag after a kart tagged a marshal when we
had made up a good 10 spots again and they decided to re-grid. The second
restart was not as good for us and then with number 90 making his way past
everyone with the same technique of a nice push into the tight complex and
screwing up everyone he passed it turned into a fight for 17th that
we eventually lost with a bit of a failed lunge to finish 19th . Not
so bad for a first finish but as always the what could have been seemed a
little more interesting, what was also interesting was Cameron’s speed mid
race, at that point he was as fast as the front runners so there is some
promise.
Then the repercharge, all looking good until sitting on the
grid Mr Plato turns up with brand new tyres having not competed in the dry
heat, last months club meeting he had pushed us into an accident and starting
from the back he was again clearly intent to get passed anyone and everyone,
just past the start he sent Cam into a spin as predicted with a push that yet
again was seen by nobody! Bring on the cameras!!!!! After recovering Cameron was
fast, running times very similar to the top of the grid and passing multiple
karts to finish in 20th place.
Whilton Mill this week for the club and the FKS at Rowrah, I
am now certain Cameron will be in the top 10 by the end of the season, his
speed is clear to see and once we get the hang of not being on the grass in
turn 1 we should start to climb the ranks.
